What NOT To Bring To A Scrap Metal Facility

What NOT To Bring To A Scrap Metal Facility

Recycling scrap metal is beneficial for the environment, the local economy, and your wallet. However, not all items can be accepted at recycling facilities. At best, these materials will contaminate or slow down the recycling process. At worst, some items can be dangerous to the workers. Here is a detailed explanation of what NOT to bring to a scrap metal recycling facility.

Hazardous Materials

Hazardous materials cannot be brought to recycling facilities because they risk serious harm to the workers, equipment, and environment. This includes:

  • Batteries
  • Pesticide or chemical containers
  • Paint or solvents
  • Oil, gasoline, or fuel
  • Items containing mercury (thermometers, fluorescent bulbs)
  • Items containing freon (refrigerators, air conditioners)

Instead, look for hazardous material collection efforts in your local community. For example, Frederick County hosts household hazardous waste collection events every Fall.

Garbage

It may seem obvious, but garbage cannot be recycled. Scrap metal facilities will not accept wood, rags, plastic, fabric, leather, or rubber. Most electronics, including monitors or old TVs, will not be accepted, either.

Some facilities, such as Reliable Recycling Center in Frederick, Maryland, accept clean cardboard. We also accept PCs and other circuit boards.

Explosives or Pressurized Containers

Please do not bring explosive items to recycling facilities. Pressurized or sealed containers are also dangerous because if they’re crushed during the recycling process, they might explode.

A few examples in this category include ammunition, fireworks, aerosol cans, and cylinders. However, Reliable Recycling will accept disassembled containers, such as:

  • Fuel tanks and propane tanks – Must be cut in half and free of all residual fluids
  • Barrels & drums – Must have a large opening and be free of all residual fluids
  • Hydraulic cylinders – Must have 1/4″ hold drilled in the top and bottom

Tires

Loose tires or tires on rims will not be accepted at scrap metal recycling centers. However, the steel rim alone can be recycled for cash.

It is best to dispose of these items through local collection efforts. Frederick County residents can get rid of their scrap tires for free at yearly tire drop off events, held every Fall.

Sharp Objects

Sharp objects post a serious risk to workers in scrap metal recycling facilities. This includes cut metals, knives, blades, ceramic, and glass. You shouldn’t throw away these items without the proper precaution in your regular recycling or trash bins, either.

Instead, sharp objects should be carefully separated from the rest of your materials and clearly labeled. If you choose to throw these items in the trash, wrap them in cloth, bubble wrap, or duct tape to reduce the risk of injury.

Items with Non-Metalic Components

Some items may contain valuable scrap metal, but their non-metallic components cannot be recycled. You should always separate the metal from these items before you bring them in. For example:

  • Mattresses containing metal springs
  • Electrical wiring with plastic insulation
  • Metal furniture or fixtures with wood, glass, or fabric attached
  • Appliances containing plastic casings or electronic components

I found the staff pleasant and helpful, each time I went with my refuse. I separate my materials and don’t expect anyone to do it for me; this way I know what I am getting. I found their prices competitive and it is convenient that they are open six days a week. There is something to say about a multi-generational family-owned and operated business. They have made a commitment to their community and are stakeholders in the city and state. They are not fly-by night. Reliable has my business every time I am in need of their services.
